I've been feeling a little down in the dumps lately, and I'm trying to not let it get to me too much. As you may already know, I graduated last May, and, since then, have been looking for a job. I live in a small-ish city smack dab in the middle of nowhere, really. Most of my friends who have teaching jobs drive around a 50 or so mile radius just to make ends meet. It really pains me to hear that my fellow colleagues aren't getting paid very well or are working jobs that don't have anything to do with the degree they worked so hard in, or (even worse) working jobs they don't actually enjoy.

I've been really picky with the jobs I've been applying to. I don't want to commute, since I've driven 2+ hours everyday for the past two years, and I'm quite honestly sick of it. I also want a job with set hours. For all the grad students out there, you understand what I mean about this. Being a grad student is, in itself, a full-time, around the clock job. Lastly, I want a job that I know I'll have fun doing.

My requirements aren't demanding, and I should be able to find a job, right? Well, my location and the current state of the job market just aren't in my favor. That's why I've been a little down. But you know what instantly makes me feel better?
Dressing up.

Mixing clothes to make an outfit and putting makeup on really help me get out of cliched rut of blah.

What do you do to banish the blahs?
I hope everyone is having a wonderful week!

ps. I've just got a Pinterest account and have been furiously pinning! I'm totally hooked. Come pin with me!

it instantly puts me in a better mood! :)
i love your outfit, your shoes are so cute!
and i totally feel where your coming from about getting a job, there are certain things that you just can't compromise on and if you did, you'd be unhappy!

  4. Lace and florals, yay! Not that I have a degree in anything, but my bf does and I feel terrible for him having to work at the same job as me. Admittedly film is not the easiest thing to find a job in. A lot of people I work with have degrees in things and are stuck here. Now I'm sad thinking about it, lol

  5. I'm sorry to hear you've been feeling blue but at least you look great in your fab outfit! Love the lip color, btw. Hang in there, I know the job market is tough out there but something will come up. In the mean time, enjoy the free time...after that the only free days you'll have are your two week vacations once a year...no more free summers again. :(

  6. Sorry to hear about the job stuff - that really sucks. I'm starting to enter a full on panic about finding an academic job this year before I graduate next May and get booted from the country so I feel your pain. Hang in there though and I'm sure things will improve. In the meantime, I suggest watching back to back episodes of Curb Your Enthusiam or Parks and Recreation (always cheers me up).

And I love those wedges - can't believe they're Hot Topic (I always have bad luck with their shoes).

  7. I can completely understand, Laura! That must be so frustrating and disheartening. We have some jobs in the ATL, I think! Wanna move down here? I'll take you to the Sweet Auburn Curb Market and we can go food shopping together! In all seriousness though, you look gorgeous in these photos and not a bit down-in-the-dumps! When I feel down I usually like to eat something buttery and flaky with a bit of chocolate ... nom nom nom. Your way is much healthier!

  8. I got the job hunt blues too, mostly because my parents asked me what I'm doing with my life. I was like...'21 is so EARLY how...am I supposed to know that?!'

I think people in their 20s always seem to be at a bit of a loss. At least you KNOW what you want!

I think you'll honestly be more happy waiting and searching for the perfect job than jumping on the next available position, just because you feel like you have to. You worked hard, you have a right to be selective!

  9. You should be able to find a job that meets all those requirements, you deserve it! Sorry its taking so long to find it :( Dressing up does help. And chocolate. And 30 Rock. And chocolate.

  10. I hate commuting too - two hours on a bus every days really sucks. Drains me totally out and makes the day last so much longer. I'd just love to be able to walk to work x

  11. Awe Laura I am so sorry to hear that you can't find a "gig" near you. I sure hope something opens up! Just hang in there! Have you and hubby ever considered a relocation? I know that is a HUGE step and he probably has a great job but it is something to consider. Now on to you with your beautiful self...girl you are totally dressing your butt off these days! I am just loving every single one of your outfits! That top is so delicate and girly. PERFECT with that skirt and those wedges. I will say a prayer for you tonight that the Lord opens up a job opportunity for you and also that you are content in the mean time! Kiah

  18. There is no way that those shoes are from Hot Topic. They are totally adorable!!!

I'm sorry to hear about your job woes. :( Kind of glad I switched out of English, not going to lie. Location has a lot to do with it, I'm sure. I would have the same problem here. It seems like all of the jobs are in big-ass cities that are nowhere close. This means that commuting is the only possibility. I don't mind driving as long as I have kick-ass tunes, but I don't want to drive 2+ hours on a daily basis, either. Noooooo, shpank you.

  20. I hear you on being picky about a job based on the commute. I've had a 3 hour/day commute for the last 7 years, and seriously, I've about had it. I hope you're able to find something soon. It's definitely a rough time to be a recent grad, and I feel for you.

On a lighter note, cute blouse!

  21. i feel for you. i'm a lit major but i ended up working in a bpo. times are hard and it's harder to keep heads above water. some are just lucky enough to get high paying jobs with the degrees they earned.

  24. Hi thanks a lot for your comment. Yeah I wanna go darker as well and need to find the color I used to have :)

It's hard with jobs as I've been there. There are lots of jobs available and you just have to keep trying.

  25. Dressing up is an excellent way to beat the blahs, which I often try myself as well... and I am loving this outfit, I think you look really good.

It's hard out there, I have a job in my field right now, but I am realizing that maybe it's not what I want to do, and thinking that I chose the wrong path from grad school forward. It's hard.

    Feel better :)

  26. You look lovely! I adore your shoes :) But that sucks for the whole job thing.. Have you ever thought of moving?
    Anyways, good luck!!

  32. I'm sorry to hear that things still haven't turned in your favor job wise. Keep your spirits up and keep at it! I feel your pain about commuting. For the last few years my round trip commute has been an hour, but in years past it was longer. Dressing up usually helps me with the blahs (though it didn't today, but we can't win them all. Or so they say). In other instances an old favorite (book, movie, song) will do the trick or just some down time with a cup of tea.

  33. Wah, that's the kind of situation that would totally send me to dumpsville too. I think you just have to TRY to think positive and believe that it will work out somehow...and wear print and lace and remember to put it all together each day...

  34. It's so hard when you know what you want and it's just not available. And when you're at home without a job I always get into a funk and it makes applying for things with my whole heart even harder. I found that even having one little thing to make me get up and get dressed that made me feel productive helped. I know it will work out for you. This is just The Meantime and it's a tricky one. Good thing you have such a pretty top and rockin shoes to get you through!

  35. Laura, I think it's great that you're holding out and waiting till you find a job that not only meets your requirements, but one that you will have fun in. I can tell you there's nothing worse than going to work to a job you hate. I did it for an entire year and it almost cost me what's left of my mental sanity. If you can make ends meet, then do wait till a good opportunity comes along. In the meantime, temporary jobs are a good option or perhaps working part time in something you like. In the meantime, you are looking smashing in this outfit. Lady, those wedges are nothing short of incredible! OMG, I love, love them! And the scalloped edge of this shirt is just the type of girly detail that sends me over the edge! Beautiful! Keep the faith, sister!

  36. Keep your chin up! In the meantime, this beautiful top with the lace would pick up any dreary day!

  37. it's such a beautiful top...

awh... cheer up... you'll find a job in no time. just be positive. :D

  38. despite you being down in the dumps you are looking especially splendid. this is my biggest fear, and I am not in university yet, is to graduate and be jobless. hopefully it turns around for you, you are smart, well dressed (for sure!), and fully capable. keep your head up and something will turn up.
