Go on ahead and say it. Laura, you look like a reporter from the 80s. Well that I do. The hot pink blazer takes care of that. I had to take off my vintage-inspired specs for these photos because I really looked and felt like I was whisked back in time, and I felt compelled to start asking the hard-hitting questions.

In truth, I kinda like this clash of pinks/maroons. Separately, the blazer and the dress are among my least favorite pieces of clothing I own. The jacket was a cheap $0.50 afterthought. I contemplated taking the massive shoulder pads off, but that requires cutting through the inside lining. The dress was begrudgingly purchased at the behest of a friend, who thought that it would be conservative enough to wear when teaching. The neckline is this odd rectangular shape which flatters no one, and when I wear it with tights, the underlining clings to it like Paula Deen to butter.

Together, these two negatives make a positively interesting outfit. (See what I did there? I just make my title relevant to the post)

  6. Ok so you do look a little reporter-y, but in an awesome way. When I was younger (and bolder) I would have worn it and started interviewing random people on the streets.

  10. i LOVE everything about this outfit.. especially the hot pink blazer! I really need to spice up my blazer collection as I only have neutral colors and if I'm wearing mostly neutrals, the outfit looks so blah. BUT, whenever I go to the thrift shop, I never find anything good in the blazer section :( BUT, I really LOVE this outfit :)

  16. LOL! "Like Paula Deen clings to butter." That's fantastic... and true. So very, very true.

You look too cute in this outfit! I avoid shoulder pads like the plague, because they give shoulders like a juiced up football player. You, on the other hand, look positively perfect!

  17. the belt is a nice addition to the outfit! and pink and maroons look great I think!

  18. Umm Laura, I actually liked how you styled this, and the shoulder pads aren't so bad on you. Overall, I loved this outfit. This looks lovely on you. I love the pink blazer, though I don't think I could find a way to style this myself, but you did, great job! Oh and those shoes, I love them!

  19. You are adorable in these pictures L! I love the different facial expressions. I love the contrast of color between the blazer and the belt - they really bring the outfit together. It's all about the details anyways and the flats alone did the job here ;) Have a great day!

  24. I am always quick to take the shoulder pads out of thrifted things, but I'm not sure I would with this blazer. It appears to be one of those rare creatures that doesn't look half bad with a little extra shoulder-emphasis. It's a lovely color, btw. I bet it'd look great with a crisp white shirt and jeans.

  25. I always remove shoulder pads from thrifted clothes. I don't like the way they feel when I wear them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. hehe, love your comments :)
I only keep shoulder pads in my suit jackets, but I did buy ones to go in a casual jacket, it helps it hold its shape.

I think your outfit is great! Works really well together.

I love the hot pink jacket and actually think the clash of the pinks and maroons works. Somehow. ;-)

  31. Haha like Paula Deen to butter!! Love it!!
You look adoreable! And I love the shoes!

I grew up in the 80s and had an awesome hot fuchsia pink short sleeved button up with massive shoulder pads in it. It was my favourite top-I felt so grown-up in it!

  44. Laura, I am always amazed by the creativity of not just your writing but also your outfits. I like that dress, I think it looks great on you! The blazer is also a nice colour and honestly, accented shoulders are now really in. Sometimes it is the things in our closet that we never thought would work...actually does!

  51. Oh goodness. This is a little scary to me because I thought I was so past my mom's dated 80s fashion but I really adore this outfit. Does this mean I like 80s fashion? I think the pattern of the dress really updated things.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well after all, two negatives do make a positive right? I hear you about the trepidation of cutting through the lining to remove the shoulder pads. I might consider taking it to a tailor if I didn't feel brave enough to risk it myself. However, if it only cost me .50 cents then I might be willing to risk it! You rock it anyways so I wouldn't sweat it too hard.

    ReplyDelete
  53. two wrongs make a right?? i totally get it! i ended up taking the pads out of a couple old blazers, but i actually think those shoulder pads look ok here. maybe it balances the fullness of the ruffles? anyways, i think you look supa fly :)
