Today, I wanted to share little bits about me for all of you to know. First, I want to thank Kim and Karla for awarding me awesome blogger awards! This post is also for Bessie because she keeps on nagging me about doing a proper about me post. (kidding!)

Laura Factoids:
1. I was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to the US when I was 14. I lived in California for 6 months before moving to Alaska, where I stayed for my high school and undergrad degree.

2. I am part-Filipino and part-Chinese. Though, like many Filipinos, I am also part-Spanish. I speak Filipino quasi-fluently, meaning, if I'm at gunpoint or when I'm really drunk. That said, my slang is VERY outdated, and I don't understand most of any new slang that people use. So, most of the time, when I listen in on conversations, I get totally lost. Pathetic, I know.

3. I got my M.A. in English literature this May, the focus of my study being Old English Language and Literature. My thesis was on Old English charms and their relation to magic and religion. To do this project, I had to learn how to read and translate Old English. So yes, sometimes, I spout off Old English words at random.

4. I used to want to be a linguist, so I took Spanish, French, and Japanese in high school and undergrad. Now, I can only mouth conversational phrases, as long as they include Muzzy. I then focused on just the English Language and learned Middle and Old English.

5. I also used to want to be a chemist, and I devoted 3 long years of undergrad to it. Crazy, I know. I was pretty good at what I did, actually. During my sophomore year, I surprised all the grad students who worked in the lab I was doing my project in. They all thought I had mad science skills. Sadly, I HATE Math. That's one huge reason why I didn't want to go further with Chemistry.

6. I have 3 adorable cats: Pandae, Flash, and Choco.

SDC19553

This isn't the best picture, but all three of them were in one shot, so I just HAD to use it! Pandae is our rambunctious cat who loves to get in trouble. But he's so sweet and loves to cuddle! Flash is our snobby cat. Ok, he's only snobby to me. And Choco is my fluffy, loving black cat who loves to meow us awake every morning.

7. I'm a food snob. Kinda. My husband and I like to make our own food and eat locally as much as possible. We also like eating locally-grown produce and meat because we believe it tastes much better. Because we're land-locked, this means we can't eat any kind of seafood, which makes me sad because I am obsessed with fish, crab, shrimp, squid-- if it comes from the sea, I'll eat it! Sometimes, though, we'll go eat fast food because it's convenient and satisfies our cravings.

8. I am also a book snob. Kinda. For a looooong time, I only read works written by dead English men. Yes, someone actually came up to me and told me, "Laura, I've noticed that you only talk, write about, and recommend books by dead English men. Do you need psychological help?" What can I say? I was obsessed with British Literature! It took me 2 more years after that to start branching out. Now I have tons of favorites from many genres! Stay tuned next week for a book post!

9. I was one of those kids who basically did a bit of everything, growing up. I played the piano and the violin, I danced ballet, did glee club, was a girl scout, did oration/speech... blah blah blah. I blame my extra-curricular activities for my indecision in determining a singular career path.

I wanna know more about YOU! Leave me a factoid about you in the comments! and have a lovely weekend!

  1. Wow your MA work sounds really interesting! Some of the old English words confuse even me, I think i'd love to read more of my nations dead writers if we hadn't chopped most of them to pieces at school in English lessons rather then reading them and enjoying that for what and who they are. Probably half the reason why I hate Shakespeare - that's probably a crime for an English person so say that so i'm finishing this post now before I say anything else incriminating lol

  3. Laura, thank you for sharing so much about yourself, I can't believe you have lived in so many places already and had so many interests in college!

My random fact: I played piano for 6 weeks but violin for 12 years and yet now, I want to take piano again!

  4. Nice facts! My random fact is that I have studied English, Swedish, Spanish, German, and Russian, and of course my native language is Finnish. :) I'll be sure to include other facts to my blog later on ;) xoxo

  7. Your M.A. works sounds a lot like what mine would have been if I stuck with English. I had a love/hate relationship with Old English.

  8. I don't really like cats much, but I really feel like I need to hug Choco immediately. Sooooo fluffy and adorable...

My random fact is that I dropped out of college and spent a lot of money to go to makeup school just to turn around and do nothing but my own makeup. I don't like doing makeup on other people really, they fidget too much.

  10. Ooh I love this kind of thing, I'd say I'm pretty nosey so this is excellent, heh! As for me, well I'll have to give it some thought, all I can think of right now is that at 18 I still have most of my baby teeth- random and unimpressive!

  12. I love this post Miss Laura :) It is so fun to learn about other bloggers. It is so awesome you lived in Alaska! What is it like there? My Dad says he wants to move to Alaska when he retires and live in an igloo haha. My Mom says he will be an Eskimo all by himself because she is moving to Hawaii lol. Your kitty babies are precious. I have 3 grown cats and a kitten! I will have to post pictures of them!

  14. Laura, first of all, can your coat and scarf be any more adorable! I want that coat! I think it suits me! hee hee! Second, I loved reading this factoids about you! I didn't know you had three cats! Oh my goodness! I can't imagine having three Roxys. A fact about me...I spend more money on hair products than I do on clothes! :) It takes work to make these Botticelli curls look just right, you know!

  15. OMG! I can totally relate to most of the facts about you. I was convinced I wanted to be an Astrophysicist until I was 18, when I randomly decided to switch to English and History!

    Dead white guys: check.
    Lots of activities: check.
    Food snob: check check check.

  16. Holy cow, you are my FAVORITE blogger!!!!!! We have so much in common, it's ridonkulous! (hope that's a slang you know! haha)

Okay, I also LOVVVVVVVE British Literature and I have so many copies of works written by dead English men. Sometimes dead German or Russian men. People give me weird looks as well, but I can be a Lit snob if I wanted to :p

I got kind of into poetry a little, and really loved the works of William Blake. I even pondered getting a tattoo of one of his very short 4 liner poem on my arm. It's so horrendously geeky but I feel it's something I must do. For the love of Literature!

Awesome that you have an MA in English Lit. I've always wanted to pursue an MA degree but I figured i really have to work and I'm afraid of piling on debt from school. How long did it take you? I have a BA in English Lit, with a focus on Modern Lit, but of course modern can be ambiguous and it's certainly within the past 200 yrs or something :p

You need to start a blog dedicated to books and your current readings.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Also, you went to school in Alaska? That's awesome!

  18. I like your coat, and your cats are cuties.

  19. I think you always have the best most creative titles for your blogs! It makes me ever so happy! :3 Your cats are adorable, as are you. Of course!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Love the pictures of your cat - they are adorable! Wow - can't believe you wanted to be a chemist, the highest class I have ever taken in chem was AP and I hated it! Hence the law route since it involves no math or science. Another random fact about me is I danced ballet from age 6-10 and landed a gig with the Boston Ballet Company until one day my mother saw my instructor walk out of class with bent shape feet and fearing that I would be the same, she took me out of the program. Sometimes I regret it because I could still be long and lean now :) Have a great weekend my dear!

  22. Really great to get to know the person behind the blog. I was like you in my undergrad education as well. I was a Human Development major, who was determined to go into Pediatrics. I completed all my pre-med requirements only to realize near my last year that I hated the chem and bio. I did a complete 180 and is now pursuing my MBA. Funny how things work out sometimes.

  23. I think you should do a post on some old English words we could use in every day language! I think that would be awesome!!
    Love the red coat!

  35. I love finding out more from my fave bloggers! That's so neat that you've studied so many different languages-I just know English, French and I'm trying to learn Arabic (not too successfully!) Your cats are adorable!!! (If you don't know already I'm a crazy cat lady!) Love the scarf-very cute!

  36. You kitties are the cutest little things (your scarf if pretty darn cute too:)!

I studied biochemistry for a couple of years, then I moved across the country. After dealing with a new college and transferring credits, etc. I decided that I just wanted to graduate ASAP - which meant a degree in social science (which I actually enjoyed quite a bit) instead of biochemistry.

  37. Awww... I like your red coat, Laura! I love the collar, and your scarf is just so cute! You and I have the same ancestry, I too have both Chinese and Spanish ancestry but lol.. that's like 3 or 4 generations ahead of me so yeah, it's too far to trace. Oh, and I'd happily orient you to the new slangs so you don't get lost amidst the chatter lol. And aww... your 3 cats are the cutest! I am a cat-holic as well, and my cat, Orin, has the same attitude as your Flash lol Prolly due to the fact that he's the only cat around the house that's why he's spoiled.

    Have a great weekend, Laura!

  43. I'm awed by your old English skills. It was the WORST English class I took in college. I strugged so much, even though as a Latin minor I had a little bit of a head start. Still, it was impossible for me. I think I'm very lazy when it comes to learning languages. (Ask my Spanish teachers in college and high school!)

Okay, so a factoid about me....I moved around a lot as a kid. I went to 9 different schools from 1st grade to 12th grade. It's crazy now that I think about it. But it's made me into who I am today. But I've always been curious as to what my life would be like if I had just stayed in one city my whole life.

I LOVED learning more about you and cannot believe that a) you have an MA, b)even CONSIDERED majoring in chem lol and c) that you're married. You totally look young and I thought you were younger than I! haha. As for the wee factoid? Lets say your cats would LOVE my home. For I have 3 adopted wee birdies: 2 budgies and 1 tiel. <3 <3 <3 them ^_^

  53. Is it just me or you are now using DISQUS for your blog comments? This is just recent, right? I get too confused cause of my absence in blogging. WE have so many things in common!!! Haha! I did not have an MA in LIT but I took up BA English in College. I also wanted to be a linguist but that was so history. Haha.

Hmmm, this is really interesting. Little fact about me, I used to mortify my body with piercings on my growing up years. Strange, no? Happy Weekend! XD

  54. You look adorable. I love your coat!! That's so cool that you lived in Alaska. What was it like with the sun changes? I've always been curious about that.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thank you! I've considered adopting birds, but they're a little too noisy for me! hahaha and my cats would totally go crazy around them!

  56. Chyrel, I did JUST start using Disqus, like a few hours ago! So nope, it's not you! haha. I thought it would just be easier to reply to other bloggers :)

Oh man, I used to love piercings too! I only have 5 left, all on my ears, but I used to have more. Also, I wanted to get my nose pierced, but apparently there is a huge vein sitting right where I wanted the piercing, and it erupted when we tried. Blood SQUIRTED, no GUSHED, everywhere. It wasn't pleasant.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks, Kirstin! The sun changes actually weren't so bad. I adapted pretty quickly. It's awesome that in the summer, it's still light outside until about midnight!

  58. you lived in alaska?? so awesome!! and your cats are so cute! that fact that you know old english is pretty awesome i must say, i try to muster random words out that ive heard in movies or video games, but actually studying it must have been soo cool! and that you speak philipino si pretty awesome aswell, i am a linguist (er studying to be one) so this is all super fascinating to me! haha. anyway i cant wait for the book post, im a book snob my self and love getting recomendations for books! also cute coat! love it :) great post, it was nice learning a little more about you :)

I guess I already left a fact about me in this comment, I'm studying to become a liguist and culture expert :) yay! thats why I moved from Salt Lake City, UT to vienna 5 years ago :) xoA_Riot

  59. Cuuuute coat! I used to want to be a linguist too, idk why I stopped with that idea. I'm the same w/ my Russian, all of what I can say comes from my 200 year old grandma and my professor parents. My slang is nearly nonexistent which makes speaking it fluently difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love this post to bits! It's really fun to know a little more about our favourite bloggers. Ooo, I will never have guessed that you lived in Alaska! When I hear Alaska, I think snow, lots of lots of snow! I'm the complete opposite from you, I love Maths and Science and I'm really bad with languages. It's pathetic that I'm in Sweden for almost a year and I can only managed a hello and goodbye in Swedish.

I laughed soooo hard when you said you only read books that were written by dead English men. I only had that when I was in high school because that was the kind of books on the list of what to read for the school year. I'm glad to say I've read a few then :D

I don't think I can be a food snob, although I do agree with you about locally-grown produce, but I can not give up seafood and even fast food. I just love food too much :D
