Holiday DIY- Glitter heels

For me, the holidays give legitimate reason to dress up in ridiculous amounts of sparkle and shine. During this time of the year, I tolerate the mega sequined floor-length gowns and the bedazzled sweaters. When it comes to wearing bling, however, I like to keep it simple and stick to accessories or small details that pop.

I've been lusting over these Miu Miu Glitter pumps for a while now, but who has $500 to drop on a pair of shoes that will only be worn a few times? (OK, I'll probably wear them everyday, but still-- $500 is definitely over my budget)

After rifling through my shoe closet and craft supplies, I came up with this inexpensive solution! RED GLITTER PEEP TOE HEELS! Read on frugal fashionistas, and learn how you can score a pair for as cheap as $5.00.

RED GLITTER PEEP TOE HEELS

Estimated Time needed to complete project: 1 hour painting + 24 hours drying
Materials:

You will need:1. A Pair of shoes. These inexpensive heels from Target were hiding in the back of my closet.  2. Tacky Glue. $2.00 in craft stores 3. Glitter. I used medium-sized glitter because that was all I could find in my craft supply. If you're going to buy glitter for this project, I recommend using finer glitter because it applies easier and smoother. Approximate cost- $2.00-5.004. Brushes or Sponge Applicators. $0.50 in craft stores5. A disposable bowl or receptacle. For mixing the glue and glitter. I found this tin lid in my basement.6. LOTS of newspapers. To cover your work area and prevent glitter frustration.7. Tissue or a clean rag8. OPTIONAL: Spray adhesive that dries clear-- $5.00-7.00 in craft stores.
STEP 1:




Clean your shoes with a clean rag or tissue. Make sure to remove any marks or stains. You want a clean, smooth surface for the glitter to stick. Next, stuff the insides of the shoes with crumpled newspaper. This will catch most of the glitter. 
STEP 2:

Lay a couple layers of newspaper on your work area. In a container, mix some glue and glitter until it reaches this consistency. Work with small batches to prevent the glue from drying up and getting hard too quick.

STEP 3:

Start painting the glue/glitter mixture onto the clean shoe. Apply a thin layer over the surface, making sure to get all the edges. Do small areas at a time. 
STEP 4:

After painting a small surface with the glue/glitter mixture, sprinkle the glitter over that area, making sure to cover all the painted spots. The tacky glue dries clear, but still try to get as much glitter on the shoe as possible.

STEP 5: 

Lather, rinse, repeat. The painting took about an hour to complete.

HALFWAY DONE!!! (with one shoe)

STEP 6: 
Let the shoes dry overnight. Resist the urge to poke-test for dryness.


STEP 7: (optional)
After drying for 24 hours, spray your shoes with a spray adhesive that dries clear. This will prevent any glitter fall-outs.

et voila-- glitter shoes.
