As some of you may already know, I am a huge comic book geek, and one of my most favoritest (if not my ultimate favorite) Marvel comic book character has been Thor. So, when, two days ago, I was lucky enough to score a couple of movie passes for an advanced screening of the movie, I was overcome with child-like glee--the kind that leaves you sleepless, uninterested in food, and extremely anxious but also paranoid (OK, maybe that's just me).

Anyway, when I started blogging, I stumbled upon Betty Felon's tumblr. And I love all her reinterpretations of superhero styles into wearable street wear. Secretly (ok, not really that "secretly"), I longed to be able to put together something like those of her awesome outfits. Given that I had two days notice of the event and a thesis to turn in, I jumped at the opportunity, which I am oh so glad for since my mild depression over the slump of the semester was magically lifted.

So I set off to aSECRET MISSION-- to make a street-wear worthy Thor outfit! I didn't want to have to pay too much for a new outfit, so I got this dress from F21 (which was WAY too big at the top/back, but still worked) for $11. All the rest I had on hand.

I won't say much about the movie, except that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Apart from being a huge Thor fan, I think Chris Hemsworth is a hunk of hotness. I also love Kenneth Branagh and am in awe of his amazing ability to reinterpret a comic book character, with a lot of continuity behind it, for people to enjoy. Coming from an academic standpoint, this movie really holds dear to my heart (and the months' worth of work I've done with Old English and Anglo-Saxon magic). As a comic book reader, I thought the essentials were taken care of, and that Tom Hiddleston was an amazing, amazing Loki.

Howdy! It's such a gorgeous day today! I am feeling soooo relaxed and yummy (as you can tell by my head-tilting and smiley eyes. And trust me, they're smiling) I have ONE week left in this semester!!! And since the last two weeks have been ridiculously hectic, I decided to take the day off

What did I do?
1. Wrote checks. Sent them off.  Got all that "adult responsibility" crap out of the way
2. Straightened the living room up a bit. No more dangerous electric cords lying around waiting for a groggy grad student to come waltzing in...
3. Commented on some blogs.  s l  o  w  l y getting caught up.
4. Went shopping for my SECRET MISSION (more on that tomorrow)
5. Got distracted while shopping by this:

Memoirs of a Kitty  palette: 4 eye shadows and 2 blushes $35 buy here
My excuse for getting it is...... that it's Hello Kitty?
Isn't that good enough?  : )

Actually, I was looking for a smaller palette since I'm going on vacation in a couple of weeks. I'll be Seattle for a few days to spend some time with my mom. I'm excited! But, since I HATE carrying luggage around (and my husband won't be there to carry it all for me) I am looking for space saving tactics. And this palette fits the bill!

Speaking of holidays, for those who live or have been to Seattle, do you have any recommendations for places I should go to or things I should see?

Why, hello there! I've missed you all soooo much! The past few days have been extremely taxing and stressful, that I really haven't had the time to comment properly or even visit many of the blogs I love! I still have tons of work to do, but I actually dressed up a bit today, hence the [gigantic] pictures and this post. Just a few more days, wonderful readers. Then we can be together again :)

In the meantime, if you wanna keep up with my rants, follow me on twitter

In keeping with the "forever young" theme my anxieties seem to have triggered earlier this week, here I am in ruffles, pink lips, and Hello Kitty clips. It's been dreary here in the Midwest, what with all the rain, the thunder, and that buggersome wind. So, when the sun snuck in for a peek yesterday, I took the opportunity to dress up in the most cheerful outfit I could muster before I gorged myself in barbecue goodness.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Cat Ears Make Everything Better, Right?

Superman tee: GAP (men's) :: jeggings: Walmart :: jacket: Old Navy::

Hello, gorgeous.

How are things going? Hope all is well. I'm highly caffeinated, as is the norm for me these days. I apologize if I haven't gotten to check up on the new goings on in your life. It's been hectic in my neck of the woods, what with all the thesis defense deadline and all. It'll be over in a little over two weeks. At least that's the plan. Don't worry, I'll be here, I just won't be fully here. And for that I am really sorry.

To make up (in advance) for my sporadic posts and my scrappy comments, will you accept a highly tweaked picture of me in cat ears? Thanks, you are truly amazing

I'll be on twitter most nights (and early mornings), I suspect. So, catch me there.

♥ Laura

Yesterday, I started looking for jobs online in anticipation of my graduation this coming May. Yes, it's tough finding a job that I would love to do for the rest of my life. Yes, it's ridiculous how no one  is hiring right now. But you know what hit me with the most impact? The fact that I will probably have to wear work-appropriate clothes from now on. (I'm not sure what that entails, but just in case, I'm preparing myself now)

I still don't know what kind of job I'll land. I'm hoping it's something laid back where I can still wear most of the stuff I have in my closet. But this realization, nonetheless, inspired my outfit choice this morning... and will probably continue to do so for the rest of the semester.

For the longest time, I used to dress in mismatched, loud, child-themed outfits. Though I've given away most of my stuff, I still have a lot of articles left--hence the Hello Kitty paraphernalia you see every once in a while (ok, more like, EVERY post). I'll wear these remnants proudly before I enter adulthood (confirmed by getting a job and acting like a responsible human)
RAWR. Because that's how I truly feel about getting a job.

Seafood Pasta-- It's All In the Sauce, Yo.

I eat pasta with chopsticks.... because all my forks are in the sink.
a menagerie of seafood.

You can probably tell by the stuff I mention I've been cooking that I am really craving some summer fare. I usually make my own tomato sauce from locally-grown ingredients, but it's too cold for tomatoes to grow right now, and I JUST HAD TO HAVE some seafood pasta.

Being in the Midwest (at least where I live), it's hard to get fresh, good quality seafood any time of the year. But I grew up in the Philippines where fish was a staple, and my palate just craves it all the time. So, I was lucky enough to find a bag of frozen seafood mix from my local Asian grocery store. This particular package had mussels, shrimp, scallops, squid, and baby octopi.

Xen suggested that I post the recipe I used for making this delicious dish. And trust me, it was pretty delicious. :) Though the seafood somewhat satisfied my craving, the secret is really in the sauce. When you have this down, you can add whatever kind of protein to it (or veggie), if you aren't a fan of seafood.

Laura's Quick Seafood Pasta (serves 6-8)
1- 12  to 16 oz package of seafood mix or your choice of protein, cooked.
1 lb wheat spaghetti/ angel hair noodles, cooked

Sauce: (adapted from this recipe, kinda)
1/4 c olive oil
1/2 of a medium onion, diced
2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
1- 28oz can San Marzano plum tomatoes (get this type of tomato. They are the gods of tomatoes)
1 lb Roma tomatoes, diced
1/2 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp rosemary
salt, pepper, red chili flakes to taste

1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot in medium heat.
2. Add onion and garlic. Saute for about 1 minute.
3. Add in can of tomatoes (with all the stewed juiciness) and the Roma tomatoes, cook for about 5 minutes on medium, and then reduce heat to med-low. Cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes.
4. Add in spices. Cook until the sauce is thickened and the tomatoes and onions look tender.
5. Mash with a potato masher.
6. Add protein and let simmer for another 10 minutes.
7. Add pasta.
8. Garnish with fresh basil (or dried, if you haven't any, like me)

et, voila. Happiness.

Hounds on my Nails: Review of Sally Hansen Salon Effects

I'm always in awe of ladies with pretty nails. More specifically, those who sport nails with patterns or with little charms/trinkets stuck on them. Though I know that sets like ones in the first picture are sold in many places online, I've never tried them since they're really quite impractical--especially for me since I'm always using my hands. (Sounds dirty, I know.)

I've tried drawing designs on my nails, but my hands are also not steady enough to apply consistent designs on all nails. My left hand ends up looking MUCH better than my right, most times. So, I settled for using bright nail colors or mixing up textures and colors to make my nails more exciting.

When I saw one of my colleagues flowery nails, however, I thought that the gods had finally listened to the pleas of the "handy" ladies of the world who want to have pretty nails!  Observe:

perfect houndstooth nails
Sally Hansen Nail Effects: $8.50 -$11.00
Each package comes with 16 nail polish strips of different sizes. For me, since I have shorter nails, each strip covers 2 digits. So really, one package delivers two applications. The package also includes a mini file, a cuticle stick, and instructions on how to prepare and apply the strips on your nails. I did all ten of my fingers in under 15 minutes, while watching Tangled. And no top coat was needed to seal the strip or give it sheen.

One of my complaints is that there aren't a whole lot of patterns to choose from.

If you count, there are only 9 patterned designs. The rest are just plain colors that I can either paint on with polish or top a color with glitter. Apart from these houndstooth ones, I can only see myself wearing the floral pattern and MAYBE the zebra ones. But who knows? the product is fairly new, and SH may very well come out with newer patterns.

After application, I was really worried that the edges would fray and peel. I typed, I washed my hands, I scratched the surface of the nails multiple times. I even washed a sink load of dishes. After all that, 2 out of 10 nail edges started peeling. After fixing, refiling, and re-smoothing the edges, I put a topcoat on those nails. I suspect that more nails will start fraying... I can already see some of them peeling.

As cute as my nails are now, these polish strips can't stand up to the "harsh" beating up I seem to put my hands under on a daily basis. These would be great for a special occasion or for those who don't do a lot of work with their hands.

Nail addicts, how do you make your nails more interesting?

Mini Day Off

black tank: F21:: green shorts: Old Navy :: striped sweater: Old Navy:: leopard flats: Walmart

Not an "OOTD" post. More of a "Happy Moments" post.

In the last two days, I have slept a total of 8 hours. [whine]

I usually try to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night because it helps with stress relief, weight loss, and promotes a healthier well-being. In undergrad, it was no big deal for me to get 4-5 hours of sleep per day, but now, if I don't get my minimum number of zzz's, I get cantankerous and dangerously obscene. I'm not even exaggerating.

So even though I have tons of stuff to do, I decided to slow things down a bit and take a mini day-off. No fuss dress-up, no makeup, no fancy hairstyles. Sure, I still did schoolwork, but I spaced it over a longer period of time, interspersed with moments of video gaming and blog perusing so it didn't feel like all I did was schoolwork. These photos were taken before eating a homemade seafood pasta dinner with my husband who has also been working non-stop. The pasta was delicious because I'm awesome. hahaha.

So far, it's been a great mini day-off. I wore my lovely Sinclairs and felt nerdularly cute with them. They came in two days after I ordered them! Seriously, Warby Parker, I am totally impressed by your products and awesome service.

The Long and Short of It...

I was pretty amused when the title came to me moments earlier... As I've said before, I am not  usually a maxi-wearing femme since I am only 5 feet tall, and long bottoms tend to swallow me up.  However, lately, I've been drawn to these lovely, full skirts. To prevent myself from looking too swamped in fabric, I choose skirts in a solid color, that way, it looks like I'm being lengthened.

I will not be limited by my height. I refuse to be a statistic
(hee hee)
And yes, I like to tilt my head a lot. I think it adds to the cuteness points.
