Green Monster

Ever since Lar talked about her veggie cleanse, I've been obsessed with getting more veggies in my system. I found that drinking my veggies is much easier (and more pleasant to my picky tongue) than chewing them.

Here's the basic recipe I use for my daily green monster:

I usually like using cherries and other berries as my main fruit, but once in a while, I'll throw in whatever is left in my freezer all together. Each smoothie comes out to be around 220-250 calories and is a quick breakfast to go!

What's your favorite smoothie recipe?
Share it with me in the comments! I'd love to try it out!

  1. I should try this...I'm not much of a smoothie person but this sounds good.

  2. Wooot! You're on the smoothie wagon! Let's do a little dance together!!! Ok. I'm a smoothie addict. It can be dangerous. I get totally hippy dippy weird with it. I take flax seeds (which I keep in the fridge to keep them nice and cold and hopefully, the oil in them fresher) and to use them in a smoothie I'll prep them by using a small bowl and soaking some over night in some water. They turn kind of sludge like. It's totally weird but they go in the smoothie and add a fantastic boost of essential fatty acids for beautiful hair and skin. I also got tired of the banana thing after awhile and shockingly loved substituting an avocado instead. It was so unexpectedly yummy! The cherries are probably my favorite fruit but my second favorite would be frozen blueberries. You can keep frozen spinach on hand as well and that can be just as good as fresh. Frozen broccoli can be snuck in with the spinach. If I sneak in carrots I prefer them to be fresh. OH! Pomegranate with some fresh ginger or a little cayenne can be holy moly refreshing too! Oh yay!!! I'm so sorry - you exposed my smoothie love. I'll go hide it in shame now hehehe.

  3. I'm the same way Laura. I have a Breville juicer and I love to throw in kale, carrots, cucumber, tomato, apple and celery. It really tastes good and you have lots of energy.

  4. I make a similar one for my kids, but it doesn't turn green and I'm really not sure why... They probably wouldn't touch it if it were green! lol But we used 1 cup of OJ, 1 banana, frozen berries to taste and 1 cup fresh spinach. Maybe because we only use one cup of spinach as opposed to two? Anyways, I usually make it for the kids, but I should make it for myself, too!

    1. Becks, I love to eat fresh fruit and veggies too, but in the morning, it's hard for me to find anything appetizing. In this recipe, I can taste blended cherry and banana, but when I get sick of the banana, I just use half the amount and add more cherries!

  7. Sounds delish. Our living condition has not been the best so we don't have a place for a blender nor the time to blend anything. Hopefully this will change when the house is completed. Lately I have been on a slim fast diet as it is the easiest thing for me to grab while I am running out the door...taste yucky but oh well!

  8. It certainly looks interesting. I looooooove veggies to eat, though. I'm more of a fruit hater, so smoothies are just about the only way I'll eat them.

  9. Now this looks interesting and very much delicious, although the idea of drinking spinach seems a little odd to me. Does it not overpower the fruit?

    1. I thought that too before I started drinking this. If you use normal spinach, as opposed to baby spinach, you can definitely taste something veggie, but if you add more fruit, the taste goes away!

  10. I think I like eating my leafy greens better than I would like drinking them, but I've never really had a green smoothie before, so I can't say for sure. Does the flavor of greens not interfere with the fruit?

    1. Not if you use baby spinach. And not if you add tons of fruit! :)

  13. Very smart! U should also try it w/kale AND spinach for that extra kick. Kale is tasteless and has tons of benefits :D

  15. Do you taste the spinach? I'm okay with green smoothies but the act of putting spinach in my blender freaks me out a little for some reason.

  17. ooo! Nice! I've never tried adding veggies to my smoothies before! Great idea. Gonna try this weekend.

For me, I like anything with milk. There is this famous Indian style smoothie that we call Mango Lassi.

Basically, just blend Mango or Strawberries or whatever fruit you like with a good amount of yoghurt and milk. SUPERB.

  19. Laura, I finally discover what the Green Monster is! I've always had a problem drinking smoothies and I don't know if I would be able to drink liquefied spinach. But it does sound healthy! Maybe I'll try the fruit and the almost fruit alone! :)
