When my husband and I met, we were unaware of how much either of us hoarded loved books. Now, we spend most of our "dates" searching out and perusing used bookshops then reading in the same room for hours after amassing our own piles. These pictures were taken during a recent trip to one of our favorite stores, Jane Addams Book Shop, and while my husband doesn't like his face on the blog, I managed to sneak it bits of his outfit into this post. I can't let that much dapper go to waste.

This is just one of the shelves in the Mystery room of the shop, and even though I don't particularly like Mysteries, I find myself in here quite a lot because there's a lot more room to sit around and read here compared to all the other rooms in the building. Also, it is my aim in life to collect all the paperback editions of a particular campy foodie mystery that I guiltily enjoy. It's extremely hard to find in used bookstores because, I assume, a lot of people enjoy it as much as I do, but I soldier on and look anyway.

Do you have a favorite used bookstore?
I also hoard books (I admit it) and love getting them from my local used bookstore. They've recently moved, so it's not as cozy/crazy as it used to be, but they still have a great collection & I can get half off with trade.
ReplyDeleteAnd, of course, Powell's Books, the ultimate used bookstore is less than an hour away. I try not to go there too often though. I'd spend all my clothes money!
There used to be a dollar bookstore by the mall I go to but that closed down. There's another one at another mall but the husband and I are too lazy to drive there. LOL I now resort to ebooks so I can read from my phone when I'm too lazy to hold an actual book. Haha!

What an absolutely gorgeous notion. I love the idea of finding someone who is as enamoured with literature as I am. Your shelves are just a dream! I constantly dream of owning one day owning a palatial library, Beauty and the Beast style, with a ladder and lilac walls. This is such a heartwarming post!
ReplyDeleteI'm utterly in love with your blog and am following you now! I would be so delighted if you came and visited me too! <3

Two of them! I love Tattered Cover and Black and Read here in Denver- Black and Read is particularly good, because they have an amazing sci fi and fantasy section, which makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great store! I used to work in a bookstore for about 10 years. It was such a great job because we were encouraged to read while we were there. I always knew what I wanted to read next. I loved being able to recommend books to grandparents for their grandkids. That way I could steer them away from crappy popular books and to some interesting, well-written books with strong characters. Sounds like the perfect date night to me!
ReplyDeleteLove fashion coffee table books!
ReplyDeleteMatt and I love used book stores, too. The best one near us is called The Book Barn. They actually have 3 stores all within about a mile of each other, each with different kinds of books. The best part about them is that for the most part they don't price books based on what they are. For instance mass market paperbacks are all $1 each no matter if they're considered a rare find on eBay or something like that.
ReplyDeleteThat wall of books is amazing. There a series of built in bookshelves on flavorwire today that was amazing. check it out.

Bookstore dates are the best kind! We use to go to Gulliver's Books or Barnes and Noble for dates, the fireplace with the big soft chairs at BnN is so comfy and cozy. (Still one of our fav kind of dates, we always end up going to one or the other when we get time alone.) This little book store looks really fun and cozy, I'm excited just looking at the bookcases.
ReplyDeleteA completely unrelated kid of question, but what kind of books do you enjoy and who are your favorite authors/books? I'm always curious to find out who/what other people enjoy reading. :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!! Love the photos...
ReplyDeleteand mysteries are my favorite kind of books, so I'd be in heaven standing at that shelf! :)

I looooove my books, but have yet to find a good used bookstore, instead I seem to purchase from book depository or ebay. I need to go hunting for a store methinks!

I LOVE bookstores - especially used bookstores! My favorite are little ones in small towns outside of my big city, they have the best treasures to me! My hubby and I love to read too and we'll spend cold winter afternoons together in the same room reading too - and we pass books back and forth so we can discuss them too!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I don't go to bookstores very often any more, since I mostly get Kindle books. I love to read, and enjoy being able to easily carry a few books with me on an ereader.
ReplyDeleteoh, yes I do love going to used bookstores, we used to go to a little shop that ended up closing, it was so nice to be around such nostalgia especially since the building was sooo old.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a place I would love. Anywhere I can curl up surrounded by books instantly finds its way into my heart. I also would LOVE for you to do a post about the campy foodie mysteries you've collected. I bet the cover art and titles are ah-mazing!
ReplyDeleteI recently discovered a used bookstore nearby that is awesome! I picked up a few great finds on opera and theater that I'm definitely looking forward to reading.
ReplyDeleteI love books, too. I don't really collect older books, though. They smell funny? There is something magical about the old book shops, though!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I love this! I'm a sucker for books too and could spend hours in a bookstore like that!

Thats so cute that you both like to read books and have dates going to bookstores. You are meant for each other! Also, this bookstore is just adorable :)

that bookshop is so cute! it's important for couples to share a common interest. i think that's awesome. a lot of our smaller bookshops have been taken over by the conglomerates. hahaha i miss their charm. but there still are a couple.

I loved hearing about couples with shared interests. That peekaboo photo piqued my interest - your hubby looks like a dapper dresser! Wishing you many years of book browsing ahead :)
ReplyDeleteA lot of our used book stores have closed down within the last few years but one of our thrift stores has a bargain area where you can get books for fifty cents to $1 or less. Also one of my favorite comic book stores has an ever flowing bargain section of books themselves that makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteOh, this sounds like the perfect kind of date. I hope my future bf likes books as much as I do. I've been meaning to seek out a used bookstore in the city I work in. Most days I'm just too lazy and go right home, though (unless I go to one of my thrift store haunts, both of which have nicely stocked book sections :)
