Anchorage Museum
Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you had a great weekend. Mine was pretty much spent in bed, recuperating from an awful head cold and cough. It sucks being sick while on vacation, but I'm with family, so it's all good.
We managed to squeeze a trip to the museum before I fell ill, which I'm really glad we got to do. When I lived in Alaska, I rarely got to do touristy activities, and I deeply regret that. It's catch up time, for sure.
We spent the bulk of our time looking intently at the wonderful display at the Arctic Studies wing where I took most of the following pictures. There is a wealth of information about Native cultures that was revealed to me, and I struggled to lap it all up in one afternoon. I marveled at totems, clothing, daily utensils, and various tchotchkes, each having its own story to tell.

One of the more interesting pieces I saw is this gorgeous armor made of thick hide and sinew.
This is perhaps my favorite piece ever. It's a hand-sewn coat made out of animal intestines that have been treated and dried before sewing with sinew thread to create a waterproof outer covering. I couldn't stop staring at how even and delicate the stitches were, and how visually captivating the coat is to look at.
ooh dear I hope you get better soon Laura! the museum looks pretty amazing. the coat made out of animal intestines makes my insides churn a little to be honest, but it is a pretty cool concept. and love that armless fox-man in the first pic haha!
ReplyDeleteAaarrgghh not a cold!!! Sooo sucky. Ugh, load up on vitamins, water and rest. I hope it passes quickly for you. These are some awesome pieces from the museum. I wonder how they figured out how to make waterproof garments like that? That must've been fascinating.
ReplyDelete:( hope you are feeling better soon! These piccys are lovely and even though I know I've said it before- your green hair is rocking my world! xx
ReplyDeleteI hope you've managed to shake your head cold - at least it sounds like you're making the most of your trip!

Sorry you were feeling bad. Hopefully you are on the mend. I love museums and learning about history. This looks like it was awesome! That's crazy the coat was made out of intestines! Heather

ReplyDeleteThe museum looks fun! I love the top picture! I hope your headcold is finally on the way out!
ReplyDeleteAll the faces in this museum are so interesting. Quirky, and to me, just a bit off. I guess I always figured that Alaska had unique culture but I could never put my thumb on how.

I would have a field day in the Anchorage Museum! It probably doesn't really come across on my blog (I don't know if I've ever talked about it), but I have great respect for Native American and First Nations cultures.
ReplyDeleteThat coat is bananas! We can learn a lot from Native cultures, which were good at using every part of animals and finding ingenious ways to create warm clothing in the Great North's cold climes. My mom lived on Baffin Island for two years and she brought back some amazing winterwear. Anyways, looks-wise, this coat reminds me of puffer jackets.
